Saudi Arabia is one of the richest countries in the world and aloe has a great potential there.

Saudi Arabia is a rich and wealthy nation with enormous natural resources, but mostly mineral ones. Saudi Arabia is the second oil producing country in the world after Russia. Saudi Arabia has few agricultural crops since most land in the country is a desert. However, with some irrigation projects developed by the government, there are several agricultural areas devoted to grow wheat, barley, sorghum, date palms, grapes, citrus, figs and peaches.

Today the Saudi desert is a good option for aloe farming. Aloe and desert matches each other in a good way. Since aloe is a crop with few water requirement, some desert land is appropriate to grow aloe. The Arabian peninsula is one of the most arid regions on earth, and probably the birth place of aloe vera. But with some water supply, aloe can be cultivated with good yields in the Saudi Arabia land. Therefore, the aloe industry is a potential industry to develop in Saudi Arabia.

There are two main demanding industries for aloe in Saudi Arabia.

One is the oil industry, which is increasingly requiring huge aloe quantities for use in the upstream industry and pipes.

The other is animal feed. With our proprietary technology we produce a combination of aloe crops in some varieties to produce animal feed in large volume. Saudi Arabia requires animal feed. Actually it imports from other producing countries. Aloe for animal feed is an interesting option for Saudi Arabia. With a local aloe production, Saudi Arabia may have local supply for animal feed.

Saudi Arabia has no commercial aloe plantation today. There are about 50 aloe varieties growing wild accross the country -with some large spots of aloe vaccilans, aloe socotra and aloe secundiflora growing into the mountains close to Yemeni border-, but no one commercial aloe plantation exists today in Saudi Arabia.

Green Chem to invest Rs.3 cr to set up production centres for herbal ingredients, formulations

Green Chem, a 100 per cent percent Export Oriented Unit, plans to invest Rs.3 crore to set up dedicated centres of production of herbal ingredients and formulations in Bangalore. The company has been allotted land by Karnataka Area Industrial Development Board (KIADB) for expansion. It is now gearing up to commence the construction of its Schedule T compliant production unit.

The investment has been raised partly through internal accruals and terms loans, R Rajendran, founder and CEO, Green Chem told Pharmabiz.

“There has been a significant demand from the global markets for herbal ingredients and formulations and this led us to look to expand the manufacture,” he added. The company is currently developing weight management herbal extract apart from working on newer herbal products for cholesterol control, libido booster, anti ischemia, anti arthritis, diabetes management,etc.

For the cholesterol control, the company is in the process of developing ‘Green DeFat’ which is a polyherbal formula.

There are some aloe plantations across the country, but few hectares being cultivated in Turkey. Such aloe plantations in Turkey are mostly of aloe vera (aloe barbadensis miller) and aloe arborescens, but the crop is very small and almost artisanal.

The situation means that Turkey offers excellent investment opportunities for aloe business.

Aloe business in Turkey is a challenge. There are very attractive investment opportunities for aloe cultivation in Turkey and aloe processing industries in Turkey. There are many possibilities for that.

Italy and aloe has along relationship. A large variety of aloe products are present into the Italian market. In Italy, we find many aloe products, from well known aloe juices to aloe cosmetics and aloe foods. Across Italy, a wide variety of aloe shampoos, aloe conditioners, aloe body creams, aloe facial creams, aloe cosmetics and other aloe personal care products are offered at italian hypermarkets, supermarkets, pharmacies, herbal shops, foods stores, cosmetic stores, bars and cafeterias. Most aloe products are found in Italy today.

Aloe Production in Italy

Aloe is produced in Italy at a medium/small scale. There is some local aloe cultivation in Campania, Puglia and Sicily, mostly of aloe arborescens. Some years ago, I visited small farms close to Valguarnera Carropepe, Piazza Armerina and Regalbuto in Enna province, Sicily, where aloe arborescens was grown.

I also have seen an aloe arborescens cultivation (medium size plantation) in a property while travelling by bus from Caltanisetta to Catania, Sicily, in a place called Ramacca. I have been told that other aloe plantations are located at Custonacci and Marsala in Trapani, near Palermo.

Most aloe plantations in Italy are of aloe arborescens variety. Most aloe plantations are located in the southern Italy.

However there are some small companies involved in aloe business in Italy, we believe there are interesting investment opportunities for new aloe projects, starting from new aloe cultivation in southern part of Italy to new aloe processing industries accros Italy.
