Defence scientists develop high altitude cream for soldiersNew Delhi, Feb 2 (ANI): The scientists of the Delhi based Defence Institute of Physiology and Allied Sciences (DIPAS) have developed an Aloe Vera cream for soldiers to be used in high altitude. Soldiers in Ladakh and the Siachen Glacier region often complain of skin disorders of which one of the major acute mountain sickness is frostbite, which sometimes leads to amputation of affected parts. The cream called 'Alocal' is basically composed of Aloe juice, Vitamin E acetate, Sesame oil, Methyl paraben, Propyl paraben and Sodium benzoate. 'Alocal' has been found suitable by soldiers of the Indian Army for frostbite and cold injury management. Defence Research Development Organisation (DRDO)'s DIPAS has been continuously engaged in finding out suitable prophylactics and curative measures for problems faced by soldiers in high altitude. Studies have shown Aloe Vera to be useful for prophylactic and curative measures in frostbite. The cream has a non-greasy base with 50 percent Aloe Vera in it. It does not cause sweating or flaking and does not freeze at zero degrees Celsius. In addition to its use in cold injury management, the cream can be used for burns, wounds, ulcers, cracked and chapped skin, cuts and as an antiseptic dressing. The technology has been transferred for its production and marketing to Nasik based Fem Care Pharma Limited. The cream along with a combination of Pentoxifylline, Vitamin C and Aspirin helps in reducing morbidity in the glacier region. (ANI)
